چکیده
Atherosclerosis has been linked to cognitive decline in late life; however, the impact of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and subclinical atherosclerosis on brain metabolism at earlier stages remains unexplored. This study sought determine association between metabolism, atherosclerosis, CVRFs middle-aged asymptomatic individuals. included 547 participants (50 ± 4 years, 82% men) from PESA (Progression Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis) with evidence atherosclerosis. Participants underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography. Global FDG uptake voxel-wise analyses were used evaluate associations cerebral atherosclerotic plaque burden carotids femorals assessed by 3-dimensional vascular ultrasound. showed an inverse correlation 30-year Framingham Risk Score (FRS) (? = ?0.15, p < 0.001). was mainly driven presence hypertension (d 0.36, Carotid inversely associated global ?0.16, 0.001), even after adjusting for FRS. Voxel-wise approaches revealed that areas most strongly affected hypometabolism FRS, hypertension, carotid parietotemporal regions (angular, supramarginal, inferior/middle temporal gyri) cingulate gyrus. In individuals, is hypometabolism, being modifiable CVRF showing strongest association. also reduced independently CVRFs. Cerebral include those known be dementia. These data reinforce need control early life order potentially reduce brain’s midlife vulnerability future dysfunction.

Intelligence in early adulthood and subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged men: the Vietnam Experience Study.
BACKGROUND People with higher intelligence in early life have a lower subsequent risk of coronary heart disease events, but the explanation for these observations is unclear. AIMS To examine whether intelligence in early adulthood is associated with risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in mid-life, as indicated by the ankle brachial index (ABI), and investigate its potential mediating role in ...
متن کاملImpact of the Serum Uric Acid Level on Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Middle-aged and Elderly Chinese.
AIM The carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is now validated as a sensitive marker of atherosclerosis and is directly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Considering that the independent association between the serum uric acid level and CIMT remains controversial due to the complex interrelationship with other known cardiovascular risk factors, further studies are nee...
متن کاملSleep-apnea risk and subclinical atherosclerosis in early-middle-aged retired National Football League players
PURPOSE Limited data from former National Football League (NFL) players suggest that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be highly prevalent after retirement. It remains unclear whether the high prevalence of OSA in retired players is comparable to nonathletes. This retrospective analysis compared sleep apnea (SA) risk in retired NFL players to a community cohort (CARDIA Sleep study), and examine...
متن کاملPrevalence, Vascular Distribution, and Multiterritorial Extent of Subclinical Atherosclerosis in a Middle-Aged Cohort: The PESA (Progression of Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis) Study.
BACKGROUND Data are limited on the presence, distribution, and extent of subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged populations. METHODS AND RESULTS The PESA (Progression of Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis) study prospectively enrolled 4184 asymptomatic participants 40 to 54 years of age (mean age, 45.8 years; 63% male) to evaluate the systemic extent of atherosclerosis in the carotid, abdo...
متن کاملImpact of Metabolic Syndrome on Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Asymptomatic Individuals.
BACKGROUND Little is known about subclinical atherosclerosis on coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) in asymptomatic individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed 5,213 asymptomatic individuals who underwent CCTA. A cardiac event was defined as a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, or coronary revascularization. Of th...
